ow to Access a Gmail Account with Mozilla Thunderbird 1.x

How to Access a Gmail Account with Mozilla Thunderbird 1.x

All that mail in Gmail is nice, and it is also readily available via its web interface. But Mozilla Thunderbird is nice, too, and maybe they are even nicer together.

Fortunately, setting up a Gmail account in Mozilla Thunderbird 1.x for sending and receiving messages is easy. (It is even easier in Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0 and later, though.)

Thunderbird Tips and Add-ons

Thunderbird's installation is mentioned here. While Thunderbird is pretty usuable after a fresh install, this page contains some tips and add-ons for getting more out of Thunderbird.

Opening hyperlinks in Firefox
Permanently removing deleted messages to recover disk space
Downloading webmail (Hotmail, Yahoo!, AOL, etc.) directly into Thunderbird

Opening hyperlinks in Firefox

By default, clicking hyperlinks contained in the body of e-mails will not do anything. If you want Firefox to open the link by default, you can follow these instructions:

First, make sure you're not running Thunderbird. If you are, exit it. Then, as your user. . .

cd ~/.thunderbird

Look for a directory that starts with random letters and numbers and ends with ".default". On my system this directory is called "63js5cca.default", so that's what I'll use in this example. Change according to your needs:

vi 63js5cca.default/user.js

Unless you've already did some user customizations to Thunderbird, this will probably create a new file. Add the following lines:

user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.http", "/usr/local/bin/firefox");
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.https", "/usr/local/bin/firefox");
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.ftp", "/usr/local/bin/firefox");

Save your changes and exit. The next time you launch Thunderbird, the new behavior should take effect. Test it out by clicking a URL contained in an e-mail and see what happens.

Permanently removing deleted e-mails to recover disk space

Although you might delete messages you no longer need, Thunderbird continues to store this information. Run the following command (substituting the random "garble".default that will exist in your Thunderbird settings) and you'll see what I mean:

ls -lh ~/.thunderbird/nl3igyz0.default/Mail/Local\ Folders/

You'll see a list of files, including "Inbox" and "Sent". I don't keep e-mails after I've replied to them, so my Thunderbird Inbox normally has no more than 20 messages in it depending on how behind I am at replying to people. However, after 3 years of use, my Inbox file was over 1 GB in size!

In order to recover this disk space (and permanently remove messages you've deleted), right-click on high-volume folders such as Inbox and Sent within Thunderbird and select the option "Compact This Folder". The e-mails currently in the folder will remain untouched, but those e-mails you've deleted will be permanently removed. In my case, this freed up over 1 GB of disk space. The (dis)advantage is that once you've done this, previously deleted e-mails will no longer be recoverable.

Compact your folders in Thunderbird in this fashion from time to time if you're concerned about disk space or deleted messages being recovered. As of thunderbird-2.0, it is now possible to set Thunderbird to automatically do this for you. (This option already existed in thunderbird-1.5 on Mac OS X).

In Thunderbird, select the Edit > Preferences menu. A preferences window will appear. Click on the "Advanced" icon (top-right icon), then click on the "Network & Disk Space" tab. Check the box under Disk Space that says "Compact folders when it will save over ____ KB"

Now Thunderbird will automatically compact folders to recover disk space. The first time this occurs, a pop-up window will ask you to confirm whether you want to compact the folder(s), and you can select an option not to display that warning anymore in the future. Very convenient, but remember, once you delete a message and empty the Trash folder, the message will be permanently removed.
Downloading webmail (Hotmail, Yahoo!, AOL, etc.) directly into Thunderbird

With a combination of useful add-ons, it is possible to download your e-mail messages from webmail accounts such as Hotmail or Yahoo! directly into Thunderbird. The add-ons we're about to install apparently "fool" the webmail server into thinking that you are logging into your account normally, when in fact the add-on is automatically retrieving and downloading your webmail e-mail messages to Thunderbird.

First, visit http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.html. Right-click on the link for "Web-Mail-1.1.4 (TB 2.0)" and choose "Save Link As...". The version number of Web-Mail is not important; what is important is that the parenthetical "TB #.#" matches the version of Thunderbird you're running.

Once you've downloaded the add-on, go to the Tools > Add-ons menu in Thunderbird. A new window will appear. Click the "Install..." button in the bottom-left corner of the window. Then, select the file that you just downloaded. (It'll be named something like "web-mail-1-1-4.xpi"). Click "Open", then click "Install" in the following window. (The button will start out grayed-out, but after a few seconds you should be able to click it). When the installation is finished, click the "Restart" button to restart Thunderbird and complete the install.

Once you're back in Thunderbird, go to the Tools > Add-ons menu, click on WebMail (under Extensions, which should be displayed by default), and click the "Preferences" button.

The following window will then appear:

Under "Servers," which should be displayed by default, POP, SMTP, and IMAP will probably all be red and "Error" should be displayed. To fix this for POP, edit the box next to "Port," replacing the default with "5200" as shown in the above screenshot.

Then click the green "+" button underneath the check box that says "Enable at startup." You should see a message about the server starting and the light should turn green and the "Error" message will be replaced with "Running." Click "Close" to quit the Web-Mail options.

NOTE: I didn't enable SMTP in my Web-Mail extension, because I don't need to use, i.e. Hotmail, for SMTP access. However, I tested SMTP by setting the port to "5201" and got it to work, so feel free to do this if you need to send from, i.e. Hotmail rather than using the SMTP server provided by your ISP.

Now go back to http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.html and install the extension that corresponds to your webmail account. For example, if you have a Hotmail account that you want to use with Thunderbird, download "Hotmail-1.1.3 (TB 2.0)" or its equivalent. Installation is the same as for the Web-Mail extension: from within Thunderbird, go to the Tools > Add-ons menu in Thunderbird. A new window will appear. Click the "Install..." button in the bottom-left corner of the window. Then, select the file that you just downloaded. (It'll be named something like "hotmail-1-1-3.xpi"). Click "Open", then click "Install" in the following window. (The button will start out grayed-out, but after a few seconds you should be able to click it). When the installation is finished, click the "Restart" button to restart Thunderbird and complete the install.

Now all that's left to do is add our Hotmail account to Thunderbird. Go to the Edit > Account Settings..." menu and then click "Add Account..." (This is the top of the 3 options in the bottom-left corner of the Account Settings window that will appear). Choose "Email account, then click the "Next" button. Enter the name you want to appear when you send e-mail to people, then enter your Hotmail address. Click the "Next" button.

This next step is important. Make sure "POP" is selected for the type of incoming server, then next to "Incoming Server:" type "localhost" (omitting the quotation marks). Whether or not you want to Use Global Inbox is purely a matter of personal preference. I do, but that doesn't mean you have to. Click the "Next" button. For "Incoming User Name:", enter your entire Hotmail address, i.e. your username AND the @hotmail.com. If you leave out the @hotmail.com, it won't work. Click the "Next" button. Under "Account Name:" you may want to name the account something intuitive like "Hotmail." Click the "Next" button, then, if you're satisfied with the summary, click the "Finish" button.

Now, in the left-hand box displaying your accounts in the "Account Settings" menu, you should see "Hotmail" as an option. Click on the "Server Settings" branch underneath "Hotmail," and you should see something like this:

Change "Port" to "5200" or Hotmail will not work. Under Security Settings, make sure "Use secure connection:" is set to "Never" and the "Use secure authentication" box is not checked. Whether or not you want Thunderbird to check for new messages on startup, check for new messages periodically, empty the trash on exit, etc., are purely a matter of personal preference. When you're finished, click the "OK" button to exit your account settings.

Moment of truth: click the "Get Mail" button in the top-left corner of thunderbird, and Thunderbird should attempt to login to Hotmail and download your e-mail messages. The first time, a pop-up window will appear asking you for your password. It is up to you if you want Thunderbird to remember your password (in which case you won't have to type it in anymore) or not.

Access Your IMAP Email Inbox Offline with Mozilla or Netscape

Access Your IMAP Email Inbox Offline with Mozilla or Netscape

IMAP is flexible, versatile, swift and cool. IMAP is good. But to access your mail from anywhere on the server, you need a connection to that server from somewhere.

If you leave to an area without net access and want to take your mail with you, what should you do? If you tell Mozilla Thunderbird, Mozilla or Netscape to make your IMAP account Inbox available offline, all messages will automatically be downloaded to your computer and you can read them or write replies without being connected.

To access your IMAP email Inbox offline with Mozilla or Netscape:

* Select Tools | Account Settings... from the menu.
o In Netscape and Mozilla, select Edit | Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings....
* Go to the desired IMAP account.
* Select the Offline & Disk Space category.
* Make sure Make the messages in my Inbox available when I am working offline is checked.
* Click OK.

Now, to go offline:

* Select File | Offline | Download/Sync Now... from the menu.
* Make sure Mail messages is selected under Download and/or sync the following:.
* Also check Work offline once download and/or sync is complete.
* Click OK.

To go back online:

* Click the online/offline icon in the lower right corner of the Mozilla (Thunderbird) or Netscape window.
o Alternatively, select File | Offline | Work Offline from the menu.

Archive old messages in thunderbirds

I had lots of messages in my Thunderbird mail accounts. More than 1200 send messages and more than 1500 incoming message. The send messages alone had a size of more than 25 Megabytes while the incoming a combined size of more than 800 Megabytes. This made my decision to clean up the mails even easier.

The best way in my opinion would be to archive all old messages that I would not need anymore and remove them from Thunderbird completely. After thinking about the how-to for a while I found a method that was working perfectly. Thunderbird creates so called mail folders in its profile folder. Inside those mail folders are files without an extension and msf files of the same name.

The idea was to create a new folder, name it accordingly and move it out of the Thunderbird profile folder. I created a folder sent-071101 and moved all sent mails into the folder that were older than one month. This can be done by simply dragging and dropping those mails into the new folder.

After doing that you close Thunderbird and go to the profile folder, normally located in the Application Data of the Documents & Settings folder.

I did create a new folder mail-backups and moved the files sent-071101 and sent-071101.msf into it. The mails that have been moved into that folders are not shown in Thunderbird anymore. I simply proceeded with other mails that I did want to archive and repeated the process again.

This is also an excellent way of backing up your emails regularly. Just copy all those files from the mail folders to another location or burn those to DVD or CD.

The Thunderbird profile folder is by default located at C:\Documents and Settings\van dread\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\XXXXXX.default\Mail\

Five Power Tips for Thunderbird

Five Power Tips for Thunderbird
Posted by Mark Stosberg on July 20th, 2006

As an internet professional, I use e-mail constantly. Mutt, a popular e-mail client for command line geeks had been wearing on me. I found Thunderbird 1.5 a capable replacement for my needs, and have since cut the average size of my Inbox in half.

Here are five tips I use to get the most productivity out of Thunderbird.

1. Use Filtering

When it comes down to why I decided pursue alternatives it came down to one feature: Easier filtering. I got too many “action alerts” in my Inbox. Although the sender may advocate that I should Save the Environment today, In my organizational scheme I’d really prefer to save their critical message in another folder, and save the environment tomorrow.

Create a “bulk” folder as alternate inbox for impersonal mail you don’t need to see immediately. Then the next time you get an alert that your donation is needed immediately, right click the e-mail address that the message is from. You’ll find an option to create a filter based on that address. Easy.

Tip two further extends the power of easy filtering.
2. Use Labels

Thunderbird 1.5 allows you to label a message with one of five labels, and each label changes the color of the title in your Inbox, adding a visual cue. By default the labels are: Important, Work, Personal, To Do, and Later.

Quickly label a message using the keys 1 through 5 on the keyboard, or 0 to “unlabel” a message. Learning which key goes with which label will quickly pay off.

For maximum benefit, combine the use of labels with the with the custom views that Thunderbird lets you create. I created a View created called “Work”, which expresses “Show me all the messages that are Unread, or labeled as Important, To Do or Work”. These tend to be the critical things I need to give attention to, and narrows what I see in my Inbox from over 100 messages to about 10.

Further automate the benefit of labels by combining them with the filter feature. Create filters to mark messages from particular senders as “Personal” to further reduce distraction at work.

As icing, Thunderbird lets you combine a custom view with search terms to further narrow the display of what’s shown. I can select the custom Work view, and then search within that for ones from Chris.

Thunderbird 2.0 will provider further enhance support for labels.
3. Install Keyboard-friendly extensions

It is nearly always faster to accomplish a computer task using only the keyboard, if good shortcuts are available. Try this first extension and I think you’ll agree!

*

Nostalgy adds two critical shortcuts that allow you to move or save to a folder by typing parting of the name. As you type, it shows you all possible matching folder names. This can be much faster than using Drag-N-Drop with the keyboard. It also reduces the need to keep the folder pane visible all the time. After contacting the author, an additional helpful feature was addeded for the 0.1.5. release. Now “l” toggles if the folder list is hidden or shown. See the “About” screen for the full shortcut list.
* The External Editor Extension allows you to do more complex formatting using a text editor. I use the following syntax to launch the Vim editor in a terminal, which is faster than loading the graphical Gvim:

/usr/bin/konsole --noframe --nomenubar --noscrollbar --notabbar --vt_sz=90x40 -e /bin/vim -e /bin/vim

If you don’t currently use a text editor, consider Bram Moolenaar’s Seven Habits of Effective Text Editing as an introduction.
* The Headers Toggle extension adds a single useful shortcut totoggle viewing the full message headers. Use it when you get bcc’ed on a message and want to check which address of yours the the mail was actually delivered to.
* Finally, the Display Mail User Agent is mostly for fun, recommended to make e-mail a tad more personal. It displays an icon the message for the e-mail program (or “user agent”) that the sender is using. This tells you a little bit about about the person at a glance. Like e-mail address itself, it provides a hint about the person you are dealing with.

4. Master Keyboard Shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts to use in Thunderbird’s message composition window were not easily found now from Googling. Remembering just a few of these commands is a faster alternative to loading an external editor, if they are all you need. The following provides quick and intuitive ways to move around the message window, possibly selecting text to cut or delete in the process.
Thunderbird Message Composition shortcuts
Shift Begin a selection
End Go to the end of the line
Home Go to the beginning of the line
Ctrl-End Go to the end of the message
Ctrl-Home Go to the beginning of the message
Ctrl -> to forward a word
Ctrl <- to backwards a word
PageDown Go down a page
PageUp Go down a page

A typical flow is to quickly highlight everything below the current point and delete it, to get rid of old message context that’s no longer needed.

Here’s another keyboard-based workflow that’s very handy. It allows you to quickly take action on a group of messages:

* Notice a lot of automated messages with the word “warning” in them.
* Control-K to search for “warning”
* Tab to move to message index
* Control-A to select all messages
* Del to delete them all
* Control-K to return to search box
* Del to clear the search box
* Tab to return the message index

A quick test of my own revealed it was was about 33% faster to use only they keyboard than to also use the mouse. (About 12 seconds versus 18). Stacking up these micro-efficiencies throughout a workday full of e-mail makes a noticeable difference. I find I’m less frustrated with my tools when they help me to complete a task nearly as fast as I can think it through!

Mozilla has a helpful, if incomplete, reference of other possible keyboard shortcuts for Thunderbird.
5. Solve the Desktop / Laptop synchronization problem

I store my mail in IMAP folders on a central IMAP server, so I can easily access it from home or work. However, I wanted a complete synchronization, including the address book, preferences and extensions.

Without this, there would be at least slight differences between the two contexts, and those differences would drive me nuts. Because it would look 98% percent the same, it would be difficult to remember which change existed where. Changing everything in two places would be a drag.

Enter Unison, a file synchronizer that works on Linux, Mac and Windows. Unison is a possible solution for me because my work machine stays on continuously and is accessible via SSH. If you one of machines is not available like this, consider Portable Thunderbird instead.

I use this relatively simple unison profile to tell it to synchronize my “.thunderbird” folder, except for IMAP cache folders, which I know I don’t need because the mail is stored on a central server:

# The contents of ~/.unison/thunderbird.prf
root = /home/mark/.thunderbird/
root = ssh:mark@my.workmachine.comhome/mark/.thunderbird
ignore = Name ImapMail

There is only one “gotcha” about this. Filtering rules are stored in the ImapMail folder, in a file named “msgFilterRules.dat”. That can be solved that by moving the file out of the ImapMail folder, and replacing it with a symbolic link to the moved file. This way, the file still gets synchronized because it’s outside the ImapMail folder, but Thunderbird can still find it through the symbolic link which has been created in the folder on both machines.

When I come home from work, I run Unison to sychronize any changes from work. Then before I return to work, I run unison again to sync my change from laptop to my work desktop again. Although Unison runs a typical graphical application, the fastest way to sync is run it on command-line in batch mode:

unison -batch -ui=text thunderbird

That saves the time of loading the graphical interface, as well as skipping the confirmation
step and starting immediately.

If I forget to sychronize once, nothing explodes. I can still get all e-mail from other the location because IMAP is still the primary synchronization tool . At some points I have made different changes to in both places before I sync again. Unison will ask what to do if it’s not sure which file is authoritative in this case. In these cases I have always had success in choosing all the files from one copy or another to be authorizative. That seems most likely to produce a consistent state.

It may be necessary to use different outgoing mail servers for home and work. To reduce spam, mail servers often only accept mail from their own networks. To address this, install the SmtpSelect extension. It provides a “Select SMTP” button which you can add to the toolbar. Now, switching outgoing mail servers is just a click away.

Using Gmail as Your Universal Email Account

Having a multitude of email addresses, I thought of simplyfing my life and workflow one day. I realized I’ve been wasting too much time checking up on my email from various places. There are the different Gmail accounts, Yahoo mail accounts, and even those from my own domains.

As for domains, I actually had some applications for Gmail for domains activated already–this means I could use Gmail as the default mail handler for my domain email. No more of that crappy webmail that usually comes with hosting subscriptions. In my opinion, Gmail is simply the best webmail application ever. Just an opinion, of course, but who doesn’t like that threaded-mail view and the simple interface (no clutter like those of Yahoo! and Hotmail).
One mailbox to rule them all!

Hence, Gmail being the best for me, I thought of consolidating ALL my email under one account. The Gmail hosted solution is good, but face it, when you’ve been using a Gmail account for a long time (I’ve been using it since the first beta / “by invite only” stage) you tend to have a close affinity to that one. All your contacts are there. All your stored conversations are there. It’s like one big reference you simply cannot live without. And it’s such a hassle having to log in and out of Gmail accounts whenever you have the need to check up on something that’s stored on one of your accounts.

So my solution: keep them all under one account.

You need two things:

1. Mail forwarding
2. Gmail “send from” feature

That’s easy, isn’t it? Almost all webmail (and domain email) accounts have forwarding. And Gmail has a “send from” or “send as” feature that lets you send from any address you’ve proven to be your own. Theoretically, you can make use of your Gmail address to be your universal inbox, and also the account from which you send email from any of the other addresses you own.
Step-by-step

Here’s how to do it step-by-step.

1. Set up your other email to forward to your desired Gmail account. Most web-based emails have this. If you are using a hosted solution (for your own domain, for instance), you can control mail forwarding with cPanel, Plesk, or whichever control panel your provider uses. If in doubt, ask your host’s customer service.
2. Set up Gmail to “send as” your alternative email address. Go to Settings–Accounts. Under “Send mail as,” click “Add another email address.” Enter your name and alternative email address here. You may also add a “reply to” address if you want your users to reply to a different email by default.
3. Click “Next step,” then “Verify.” Gmail will then send your alternative address the verification link and code.
4. Since you’ve already set up your alternative email to forward messages to Gmail, simply open up your Gmail inbox (in a new window, perhaps) to get the code. Click on the verification link, and your new “send from” address will be activated.

Sending from your alternative email addresses is simple. Everytime you compose new mail, you will be presented a drop-down box from which you can choose among the addresses your email will be using as “sender.” When replying, meanwhile, you can select under the Settings–Accounts menu whether to reply using your “default” address or reply using the address the email was sent to.

Now you can use Gmail to handle incoming messages to your alternative email address, and also to send messages from this address. You can set-up up to as many “send from” addresses as needed!

No more accessing multiple email accounts to get your mail!

Managing Multiple Gmail Accounts

I mentioned that not only is my email hosted by Google Apps For Your Domain, but that I also read and manage all my email online now. No more Outlook or other local email clients. In general, this has been working great — anywhere I have a browser, I have access to my email. And heck, I always have a browser with me these days thanks to my USB Key.

However, initially I had some challenges. You see, up until very recently I’ve never used Gmail for more than one account. Now I have at least 3 that I want to monitor. Have you ever tried to be logged into multiple Gmail accounts in one browser at the same time? Didn’t work out so well for me! So, my initial plan of “Gee, I’ll just open more tabs and have a browser tab for each account” didn’t quite get the job done.

To be clear: checking email one account at a time was working fine. Just cumbersome. I wanted a way to be notified without have to go look. Something like Google’s Notifier (or the FF extension I used to use) that would handle multiple accounts.

Last week, Rich mentioned Netvibes and some updates. Long time readers know that I’ve always been a fan of Netvibes, but haven’t used (nor mentioned) them much lately. His article inspired me to drop by and see what has changed recently. Once there, I remembered their little Gmail notifier widget. After some experimentation, I was pleased to discover that I could add three of those to a Netvibes tab all pointed to different accounts with no problems.

The same evening, I found the Gmail Manager Firefox extension. It handles multiple accounts with no difficulties and not only lets me know when I have mail, but for which account. It’s really very slick and has made this “migration” much easier.

So I have two options for Gmail notification/management. The Netvibes one works great when I’m spending time in any browser besides Firefox. The Gmail Manager extensions works great all other times. Happiness is achieved.

To add your ads in this version is quite simple. Go into the Admin panel of SMF and under the Configuration heading click on Ad Management then click on Add Ads. Under this tab you will see several sections, the first being Name. This should be filled in with what you want to call this particular ad. For example, if it's Google ads you might want to type “Google” (no quotes). This is done to identify the ad code so that you can easily edit it later on, or to see reports on your ad.
Next is the content section, in here is where you place the ad code. In this version of the ad mod it can handle both HTML and PHP languages. Place your Google code in here or any other ad code you may have.
After your ad code has been placed you come to a box that says “Which boards should this ad display in “. In this box you insert the number of the board you would like the ads to be displayed in. For example, if you have a board on your forum named “Rules” and it happens to be the first board on your forum, then clicking on it would give you a url of this:
http://www.yourwebsite.com/index.php?board=1.0
The board number is at the end of the url. So in that box should be put simply the number “1” (no quotes). If you want to display this ad in multiple boards, you can put 1,2 (where 2 is the number of the second board) to display it in both boards 1 and 2. If you want to display your ad code on every board, simply leave this input box empty.
The next option is “Display ads within posts”. This works the same way as our previous field, only here you are inputing were in between the posts you want the ads to be displayed. So if you want the ads to be displayed between the first and third posts, then in this field you would put “1,3” (no quotes). If you don’t want this ad to display inside any post, leave the input box empty.
Displaying ads after categories works much the same way. You need to put the category id in the input box of the category you want to display the ads after. If you hover over the link for the category you can find out what the ID is. If you want to display after multiple categories, put “1,2”(no quotes).
The following option is “type'. You can choose between “HTML” or “PHP” (google ads display as HTML). The rest of the options under this tab are pretty much self explanatory. One thing that is very important to remember, when placing “Skyscraper” ads, you must get the appropriate code to fill in the “content” field under this tab. Horizontal ads will NOT work for vertical (Skyscraper) ads.
Clicking the “Add” button at the bottom of this page will save your configuration for the ad.

Report Tab

Clicking this tab will give you a short summary on what ads are placed and where they are placed on your forum, plus how many hits they are getting.

Settings Tab

You can now have various settings on how your ads appear. The settings are:
- Disable all ads if you are an admin
- Disable all ads on a global scale
- Disable reports
- Make post ads either look like actual posts or not

Permissions

Just like in the previous versions, you can have permissions on who is able to view the ads. By default everyone views the ads. To deny users from viewing ads, you go into Admin > Permissions > Modify (the group you want to change the permission for).
You then look for the title "Enable ads" and either disallow or allow the ad code to display.

Note: It is just for default theme. I will tell you how to use this mod with other themes in next post

Webroot Antivirus

Webroot Antivirus

Webroot Antivirus with Antispyware and Firewall is a solid product from Webroot Software. As the name implies, it includes a virus scanner, a spyware scanner, and a firewall to all work together to help defend your computer.

Webroot, previously known for their Antispyware products, has partnered with Sophos, a leading SMB and enterprise security suite developer, to add antivirus capabilities to their antispyware and firewall products.

PC Tools AntiVirus

PC Tools AntiVirus

PC Tools AntiVirus program is easy to use and navigate. You can choose from two different scans. The full scan is what the average user will most often use. This will scan your entire computer. The other is a custom scan where you can choose which files you would like to scan.

One of PC Tools strengths is it makes a complicated process simple for the average user. This company has a good registry repair program as well as an anti-spyware program. Both have incorporated the same type of interface, which is great for the average user. The program has some great update features offering both automatic and manual updates, but overall this software doesn't offer as many features as the top-ranked products.

PC Tools Antivirus passed the VB 100% in 2007 and the West Coast Labs CheckMark 1 and 2. However, we did not see it on the ICSA 2007 list.

Its scanning process is very slow-way below the average scan time. On average PC Tools updates their virus definitions on a daily basis.

We contacted their email support; they answered all our questions and added an apology because it took six days to get a response.

F-Prot for Windows is easy to install and use. This antivirus program has a nice interface although it would be better if the options were available from the Taskbar instead of from the Start Menu or desktop. All of the options are straightforward and practical. Some of these options include right-click, on-demand, on-access and scheduled scanning.

F-Prot claims their scan engine uses very low system resources and therefore runs under Windows 2000, 2003 or XP.

The RealTime Protector scans all files your system accesses for viruses. The built-in Scheduler automates tasks like updating the virus definition files and scanning. The program is simple to configure, but still gives you plenty of options. The on-demand Scanner is used to manually scan your files, folders and drives.

You can also scan a file, folder, or drive from within Windows Explorer by right-clicking and selecting "Scan". We didn't notice much of a performance hit during normal PC usage.

The Help is not as good as it could be. An online database contains answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs).

AVAST 4

AVAST! Reviewer's Comments
When you open AVAST 4 you'll find two different interfaces-one for the average user and one that is for the more advanced user. The simple interface has the look and feel similar to that of DVD player software. It is unfortunately difficult to use and navigate. The options are not labeled with the exception of a pop-up description when you hover over a button. The enhanced interface provides plenty of options to customize the program to fit your needs, however it also suffers from some simple tags for the buttons.

This software provides good protection with the on-demand scanner and the resident scanner though these slow down the system while performing file transfers or opening programs. The email protection is adequate for POP3, SMTP and IMAP accounts.

AVAST 4 didn't receive the West Coast Labs Checkmark level 1 or 2 or the VB100%. AVAST wasn't as effective as some of the other products reviewed. For better virus protection refer to some of our higher ranked products

The AVAST update feature checks for product and virus definition updates at either a user-defined interval or manually. When you do a manual check for updates, you decide which updates to install. When the software automatically checks for updates, it can update the files at that time or at a time previously specified during setup.

This product is very easy to install and we didn't encounter any problems.

The manufacturer offers online support with a knowledge base search and FAQs page. You can contact customer support through email-they responded to ours within 36 hours. The telephone support is only for commercial users.

Panda Antivirus

Panda Antivirus

Panda Antivirus 2008 is easy to install, setup and there are fewer options to confuse the user. The software has a clean consistent appearance throughout the different screens that looks great and makes sense.

Panda Antivirus has fewer options than many Antivirus programs to help keep confusion at a minimum. The program also scans for anti-spyware to help better protect your machine and identity.

System performance does not suffer too much and the scanning time is similar to other antivirus software.

Panda Antivirus has an automatic update function. A full service scheduler would allow the user to define how often and when scans would occur.

An online database features answers to frequently asked questions. This is a good place to start if you have a question about the product.

G DATA Antivirus 2008

G DATA Antivirus

G DATA Antivirus, formerly AntiVirusKit, is a simple and effective antivirus solution. It doesn't include many perks, but does include the basics as well as a couple extras that have come to be expected in the antivirus market. Overall, it is an easy to use product that will keep your computer protected.

Ease of Use:

G DATA Antivirus is very simple to use. The main configuration and information page has most of the functions that you will need. If there is an option on that page that you can't find, there is an Options page that includes some more advanced configuration options for each section of the program.

The beauty of G DATA Antivirus is that there isn't much user intervention needed. The default configuration is sufficient for most home users and if you set the scans to a time when you are not using your computer there is little chance you will even notice the program running at all.

Effectiveness:
While slow, the antivirus engine within G DATA is very thorough. It is also nice that it doesn't eat up many resources while scanning. This gives you the ability to work in other applications while the scanner is running.

Updates:
Updates for G DATA Antivirus are downloaded every hour by default. You can change the schedule if you wish, but there shouldn't be any need to change this.

Feature Set:
G DATA Antivirus doesn't come with a whole slew of extra features. It does include a two part antivirus scanner that is rated very high as well as including an email scanner and a heuristic scanner.

Ease of Installation:
Installing G DATA Antivirus is as simple as following the prompts and letting it run. After you are finished with the installation, there is a significant update to the software that needs to be downloaded. At the time of this review, the size was about 15 Megabytes. This isn't done by the program during the install phase, so you will have to either do it manually or wait for the scheduled update an hour from the end of the installation.

Help/Support:
Support for G DATA Antivirus 2008 is a little bit anemic. All that is included at this point is an incomplete FAQ and a support request form on their website.

Summary:
In the overall scheme of things, G DATA Antivirus is a simple and effective antivirus product. It includes only the virus scanner, email scanner, and heuristic scanner. These all work well together to make G DATA Antivirus one of the most light weight in the market while still remaining very effective.

Norman Antivirus and Antispyware 5.81

Norman Antivirus and Antispyware

Norman Antivirus and Antispyware is a solid product that suffers from some small quirks that hold it back from being a top 5 product. The scanning features that are included with Norman Antivirus and Antispyware are great as far as detection of viruses and spyware are concerned. Unfortunately, it slowed down our test computer considerably while we were performing simple actions like surfing the web or taking screenshots.

Ease of Use:

Norman Antivirus and Antispyware is easy to use. It includes a menu that has some options in an intuitive spot, while leaving others deep within a maze of menu options that can be rather difficult to navigate.

For most users, Norman Antivirus and Antispyware has a default configuration that should help to keep them from having to navigate the maze of options and changes that can be made.

Effectiveness:
Norman is certified by VB100%, WCL Level 1, as well as ICSA Labs. It offers protection that is standard of the middle of the pack of antivirus solutions. Norman has shown a commitment to solidifying their scanning abilities by continuing to enhance their antivirus engine. The current engine, while slow in some cases, is another shining example of Norman's commitment.

Updates:

Updates are released daily on average. There is also the ability for Norman to push an update if there is a significant threat that is found. You have the ability to manually update, or set a time each day to look for new updates.

Feature Set:
Norman Antivirus and Antispyware includes the basic antivirus and antyspyware scanning. Also included are quarantines for both, as well as task scheduling and email protection. The email protection is based on the protocol that is used for gathering and sending email rather than integrating with specific email programs. This allows scanning of email attachments to occur no matter what program you use to handle your email.

Ease of Installation:
Installing Norman Antivirus and Antispyware was simple and only required a couple of clicks to get done. The software didn't require a reboot when it finished installing on our test machine, and updated itself immediately after the install was finished.

Help/Support:
Norman has a very effective support website that includes a product FAQ, customer support forums, a well equipped knowledge base, as well as security bulletins and webcasts. They also include phone and email support in the event that you have lost your connection to the Internet.

Summary:
Norman Antivirus and Antispyware is solid option to keep your computer safe from the terrors of the Internet. It includes an award winning antivirus scanner as well as an antispyware scanner. The software does suffer from some issues with overall system lag, but these are due to the on access scanner, and can be minimized for each system according to Norman's support site.

CA Antivirus 2008

CA Antivirus 2008 is a solid virus scanner that works well to find and eliminate viruses. Unfortunately, this is all it can do. No extra features are included with CA Antivirus beyond the bare minimums. In many cases, this could be considered an asset due to speed increases associated with many minimalist programs. CA doesn't take advantage of this in the 2008 version which still slows your computer down all around.

Ease of Use:
CA Antivirus is extremely easy to use. Full system scans are only 2 clicks from the main program screen. If you need to change any advanced options, of which there are very few, you will have to go a little bit deeper within the program to find them.

Effectiveness:
CA has been known for having solid products throughout their history. They didn't fail to impress this time around. The engine that is used for CA Antivirus is WCL, ICSA and VB100% certified and is well equipped to find and clean any viruses that it finds on your computer.

Updates:
Updates are checked for once a day if set to update automatically. If you have a need to get faster updates, there is an option to change the frequency of the automatic updates. You also have the ability to update manually if you have the need to do so.

Feature Set:
CA Antivirus includes no extended features that we could find in our testing of the product. Standard antivirus features such as a virus scanner, scan scheduling utility and quarantine are present, but are the extent of features included with CA Antivirus.

Ease of Installation:
Installing CA Antivirus was fast and easy. There was a glitch on the registration screen that wouldn't allow us to register the product correctly. This issue did not hold us back though as we could just cancel the registration.

Help/Support:
Support for CA Antivirus 2008 includes in program help as well as online support options. The options available online consist of a knowledgebase/FAQ. CA also offers direct phone support for $19.95 per incident. If you are inclined to search around the support website, you will find that they also offer free chat and email support. These additional options are somewhat buried and may be difficult to find.

Summary:
CA Antivirus 2008 is a good product for specific antivirus needs. It includes a good antivirus engine and stops there. Extended features are saved for other products within the CA family. If you have a specific need for JUST an antivirus program though, CA Antivirus is a good option.

McAfee VirusScan

McAfee VirusScan

McAfee is an industry leader in computer protection and VirusScan is their #1 defense against viruses. This software comes with a ScriptStopper, to prevent virus to propagate from one computer to another via email, and WormStopper.

Some downsides to the program are it doesn't provide instant message protection, P2P/file sharing protection or registry startup protection. Check out the Gold product if you're looking for these features.

Ease of Use:

If you use the default settings, setup is a breeze. The default settings provide very good protection against viruses, Trojans, worms, malicious ActiveX controls and Java applets.

The SecurityCenter has several tabs besides the VirusScan tab. There is one for Personal Firewall+, Privacy Service and SpamKiller. These are other programs offered by McAfee.

Effectiveness:

VirusScan boasts one of the best virus detection records. The software received the VB100% award for 2007, the ICSA award for 2007 and passed both level 1& 2 Checkmarks from West Coast Labs.

Updates:

McAfee VirusScan 9.0 automatically downloads updated virus definitions from the Internet on a regular basis. Staying up to date will dramatically decrease any possibility that a virus will infect your computer. On Average, McAfee comes out with new virus definitions on a daily basis.

You will have to register and login to get updates-this makes the process longer than it needs be.

Feature Set:

McAfee VirusScan offers a rich list of features. You can set VirusScan to scan your computer at a preprogrammed scheduled time. The program also scans for spyware and adware.

You can't add several tasks to the Scheduled Scan. This would be a nice quality so you could scan all files once a month and only program files weekly or any other tasks you would like to set up.

McAfee has an Antivirus Emergency Response Team that continually monitors the worldwide virus activities to provide you with the utmost safety. The always-on protection guards against viruses, spyware and other Internet threats that may enter your PC via e-mail, instant message attachments, Internet downloads, and web browsing.

Ease of Installation:

We didn't encounter any problems during the installation process.

Help/Support:

McAfee has plenty of help options, including documentation, email and phone support. We were disappointed with their email response time-it took 5 days to respond and they didn't answer all our questions, hence the low rating.

Summary:

McAfee is a name brand product that does an excellent job at detecting and removing viruses. Their update process can be somewhat tedious and their support department needs to answer their emails in a timelier manner.

Trend Micro Antivirus

Trend Micro Antivirus

Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware is a full featured and well equipped program that is geared towards keeping your home computer free of viruses and spyware. It is easy to configure for nearly any antivirus need. It causes significant computer slowdowns occasionally, but makes up for these issues with thorough scanning and frequent updates.

Ease of Use:
Trend Micro Antivirus plus AntiSpyware is extremely easy to use. Nearly all of the configuration options are set after the install is finished. Scanning and updating are as easy as clicking a button on the overview page within the program. Changing settings and configuring advanced settings is easy and each of the settings is clearly explained within the program.

Effectiveness:

Trend Micro has a history of producing effective products that have been used in homes and enterprises for years. The included virus scanner is well equipped and has a high success rate on par with many other high end antivirus programs.

Despite its high marks in scanning, Trend Micro Antivirus is slow when scanning and can cause problems with freezing and slowdowns. It also has a tendency to not play nice with Firefox and MSN Live Messenger.

Updates:
Updates can be done automatically or manually depending on your needs. Automatic updates default to being done every 3 hours. They are done in the background by default as well. The only time you will be notified of an update is if it requires a reboot for some reason. Take note that updates can take quite some time to complete depending on the size of the update.

Feature Set:
Trend Micro Antivirus plus AntiSpyware includes the antivirus scanner as well as the antispyware scanner noted in its name as well as including a utility to track unauthorized changes to your operating system or system files.

Ease of Installation:
Installing Trend Micro Antivirus plus AntiSpyware is as simple as reading a couple screens and hitting next a few times. The only problem we experienced was the initial update that the program gets after installation is finished. That update took nearly 30 minutes and required a reboot.

Help/Support:
Trend Micro has always been big on customer support. In this tradition they offer several support options. The most impressive is their guided knowledgebase. This is the first KB that has actually been useful in finding solutions to problems. If you are not able to get help for your issue through the KB, they also offer ticket based support as well as live chat and phone support. The phone support option is available at appropriate times in the USA, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

Summary:
Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware is a solid solution for those that are looking for an antivirus program that is easy to configure and doesn't require much user interaction. It has a simple interface and some of the best customer support available in the antivirus market. The only thing that keeps Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware from being a top 3 product is the severe slowdowns that can occur while performing seemingly unrelated tasks.

F-Secure Anti-Virus

F-Secure Anti-Virus

F-Secure Antivirus is a great product that offers many of the standard functions associated with antivirus software, but also goes above and beyond the bar set by others with efforts by F-Secure to educate the people that use F-Secure Antivirus on general security practices as well as specific threats.

Ease of Use:
F-Secure Antivirus is very easy to use and comes preconfigured with the most effective options for your computers security. The menu's within F-Secure Antivirus are simple and quick to display the options under each of them.

Effectiveness:

F-Secure Antivirus is one of the most effective antivirus programs on the market. Its heuristic scanner is considered by many to be one of the fastest and most complete on the market.

We did have some problems with its on-access scanner though. The test system we used is a pretty fast system. Intel Pentium D 2.8GHz with 1GB of RAM. The on-access scanner would sometimes bring this system to a halt when opening programs or moving files.

Updates:

F-Secure Antivirus checks for updates every two hours. This is fine for most people and shouldn't cause any problems. One issue that we did notice is that one of the updates that was receive required a reboot of the test system. While we had a choice in the reboot, it was odd that it should require a reboot to apply new virus signatures or even minor program updates.

Feature Set:

F-Secure Antivirus comes with the standard protection you would expect from any modern antivirus suite. Both on-access and on-demand scanners are included as well as a spyware scanner that runs with both. An email scanner is also included for those of us using local mail clients like Outlook or Thunderbird.

One feature we especially liked about F-Secure Antivirus was the integrated news on the home menu. The Security News section is full of useful information about which new security threats are out and whether you are protected from each threat.

Ease of Installation:
Installation of F-Secure Antivirus is fast and easy. It took less than 5 minutes to initially install, but required a very long update upon completion of the install. The install itself required a single reboot as well as the update that was download after the install finished.

Help/Support:
F-Secure offers several options for support. They have a "How to" section with several FAQ's included as well as offering a product manual from within the program itself. Also available are phone support and email support. You may find that support for F-Secure Antivirus is difficult to obtain once you get past the self help options. The site is somewhat convoluted and could use a redesign to make it easier and faster to use. To be fair, most people will not need to contact customer support directly if they use the self help options that are available on the support site.

AVG Anti-Virus 8

AVG Anti-Virus

AVG Antivirus has been an up and coming virus scanner for many years. Its free version is one of the most downloaded files on the Internet in the Computer Security sector. The new interface is clean and intuitive while still remaining useful.

AVG went through a rewrite of their virus scanning engine and included two of their stand alone products with AVG Antivirus as well. AVG Antispyware and AVG Antirootkit were both integrated with the virus scanner. Also revamped was the way AVG Antivirus uses the hardware within your computer. It was changed to make better use of the multiple cores which are common in todays computers. This should speed up scanning as well as reduce slowdowns.

Ease of Use:

Though AVG Antivirus is mostly a hands off program, there may be some instances when you may need to configure some advanced options. For 99% of the population though, the default options will be more than sufficient.

The menu's within AVG Antivirus are very simple and offer all the options and information needed to keep your system safe from Internet threats.

Effectiveness:
AVG Antivirus is one of the most complete programs we have found to date. It includes many new options to make it one of the most effective virus scanners on the market. It is still plagued by horrible slowdowns at times. Even things so simple as just typing an IM can be stopped for several seconds for some reason. If you can get past the occasional slowdowns of your computer, the scanning functionality of AVG Antivirus 8 is top of the line. With the rewrite of the scanning engine, AVG included multi processor support. That dual core processor you bought is actually going to start getting a workout now. AVG also included support for Windows Vista and the 64 bit versions of Windows XP and Vista.

Updates:
AVG Checks for updates every 4 hours by default. You can change this to any interval you wish. The updates section of AVG Antivirus also shows you which virus database version you have as well as when the last update was. It also tells you when the next update is scheduled. All of this information is also displayed on the main menu screen so that you always have the information at your fingertips.

Feature Set:
AVG Technologies, formerly Grisoft, has gone above and beyond with the new release of AVG Antivirus. Included with the virus scanner are a rootkit scanner, spyware scanner, an on-access scanner called Resident Shield, email scanner and a link scanning browser plugin. There is also a portion of AVG Antivirus called Web Shield. Web Shield is a chopped down firewall application that scans standard web ports for any threats encountered while browsing the web. It also includes protection for MSN Messenger and ICQ.

Ease of Installation:
Installing AVG Antivirus 8 was easy and only took about 10 minutes including downloading the additional updates required after installation finished. We had no issues or errors during the install.

Help/Support:
With the name change from Grisoft to AVG Technologies, the support site was updated and saw many improvements over the old design. Support offerings included with AVG Antivirus 8 are a FAQ, email support, phone based technical support as well as including a support section within the program itself.

Summary:

Version 8 of AVG Antivirus is a definite improvement over version 7.5. The scanning features have been sped up and the new interface is a clean and modern take on a time tested product.

Including a link scanner and integrating AVG Antispyware and AVG AntiRootkit provides an even more effective product. An unfortunate problem that has plagued AVG products for quite some time has not been eliminated even though AVG did a complete rewrite of the virus scanning engine. The on access scanner still tends to slow down computers to the point where they are not usable at times. This isn't a constant factor and has been improved significantly, but you will notice it when it happens. Beyond the slowdown issue, AVG Antivirus 8 is a complete product that will help keep your computer clean and safe.

ESET Nod32

ESET Nod32

TopTenREVIEWS - Bronze Award - Awarded for excellence in design, useability and feature set

ESET NOD32 Antivirus is a simple program with advanced features. The easy to use interface is a significant improvement over the previous version of NOD32 Antivirus. The menu is more aesthetically pleasing while providing a much needed facelift to the ease of configuration within the program.

While the scanning features were not completely changed like the interface, they are faster and more effective in this new version of NOD32 Antivirus. The included scanning features were sped up considerably to help make this a definite milestone in the development of ESET NOD32 Antivirus.

Ease of Use:

ESET NOD32 Antivirus is a changed product. The base features are extremely simple and easy to use while still being effective. The redesigned interface includes a menu on the left with sub options on the right. Several options exist in the sub options to assist in "drilling down" to what you wish to do.

There is little or no base configuration needed to get the NOD32 Antivirus working after install. If you do require custom configurations though, you have a simple advanced configuration menu that gives you all the options needed to customize NOD32 to your specific needs.

Effectiveness:
ESET NOD32 Antivirus is very effective in detecting and cleaning viruses from your computer. The on-demand scanner is fast and effective while still allowing you to do other things on your computer during the scan. The on-access scanner is almost behind the scenes compared to many other options out there. The only time you will notice what it is doing is when it detects a threat.

Updates:

The standard update cycle for ESET NOD32 Antivirus is once a day if needed. They have the ability to "push" updates if there is a significant threat though.

Their response times for new threats are very fast ranging from 1 to 4 hours depending on the threat.

Feature Set:

Included with ESET NOD32 Antivirus are several layers of protection. Antivirus scanning includes integrated real time email protection, web access protection as well as a rootkit scanner and a spyware scanner. All of these features are included and integrated into the on demand scanner. The email protection included with NOD32 integrates directly with MS Outlook and any standard POP3 email client. It surprisingly doesn't include IMAP scanning. This shouldn't be an issue for most people though since POP3 is by far the most used email protocol in use today for local email clients.

Also included to make this version of NOD32 Antivirus much more effective is the ThreatSense engine. ThreatSense is a system developed by ESET to help identify new and evolving threats and provide faster responses to those threats. Through a service called ThreatSense.Net, ESET is able to give you feedback on how to protect yourself from any threats that may just be propegating themselves on the net.

Ease of Installation:
Installing NOD32 Antivirus is very simple and posed no problems for us. The install took less than 5 minutes and required a quick restart of the testing computer.

Help/Support:
NOD32 Antivirus includes several support options included with your subscription. Included with these options are email support, a well stocked knowledge base and FAQ, as well as phone support available from 6AM-6PM Pacific time.

Summary:

In years past, ESET NOD32 Antivirus has always been praised on the detection ability it brought to the table. Regardless of its abilities to keep your computer safe, it was considered by some to be difficult to use. The new 3.0 version has changed the way customers interact with ESET NOD32 Antivirus. The menu's have all been streamlined to make common functions more easily accessible while keeping the same efficiency that was associated with the older versions.

BitDefender

BitDefender

TopTenREVIEWS - Gold Award - Awarded for excellence in design, useability and feature set

The best line of defense against computer viruses, spyware and spam is BitDefender 2008, our #1 ranked anti–virus software and winner of “TopTenREVIEWS Gold Award.” BitDefender 2008 is an outstanding product with a user–friendly interface that will scan all existing files on your computer, all incoming and outgoing emails, IM transfers and all other network traffic.

This latest version of BitDefender has a new Gamer Mode feature that minimizes impact on gaming performance by removing any popups or warnings during game play while still protecting your computer. The software still has all of the reliable features for which Bitdefender is known such as “Privacy Protection” for outgoing personal information, “Web Scanning” while you’re using the Internet and “Rootkit Detection and Removal,” which detects then removes hidden virus programs.

BitDefender has also improved their existing B–HAVE feature that runs pieces of software on a virtual computer to detect code that could be an unknown virus. In addition, a setup wizard makes it easy to customize security settings.

Ease of Use:

Softwin has covered all of the bases with BitDefender. This comprehensive product has an attractive, easy–to–use design that is consistent throughout the software and the manufacturer’s website. Because it is simple to use and updates itself automatically, you can install it on your system, then practically forget it’s there—an ideal solution for any user.

BitDefender has an option to display a small window called the “File Zone” on your desktop that indicates how many files the program has scanned in the past few minutes. You can also drag and drop files into the File Zone for an immediate scan. The program prepares a report of each completed scan so you know exactly what your files do or do not contain and you can instruct BitDefender to disinfect or remove any infected files or messages.

You can also customize BitDefender’s security settings for features such as AntiVirus, Antispam, Antispyware and Parental Control.

Effectiveness:

BitDefender’s customizable settings make the program effective for a variety of users. For example, if you receive legitimate commercial email, you can set BitDefender’s spam filters to allow specific or all emails.

Virus Bulletin rated BitDefender a VB100%, the highest honor for anti–virus software.

The VB 100% logo is awarded to anti–virus products that detect all current “in the wild” viruses during both on–demand and on–access scanning in Virus Bulletin’s comparative tests.

Additionally, BitDefender passed the ICSA 2007—a similar test that certifies the software can detect viruses, prevent virus replication, and doesn’t generate false positives.

Updates:

The live update feature checks for product and virus definition updates at either a user–defined interval, manually or default (every hour). When you do a manual check for updates, you can decide which updates to install. When the software automatically checks for updates, it can update the files immediately or at a specified time that you can determine during setup.

Feature Set:

BitDefender creates a summary log of events that shows the last definitions updates, details on any virus the software encounters, the last time you ran a scan, definitions number and more. And new in 2008, Bitdefender has added a Gamer Feature so it won't interrupt you during intense gaming.

BitDefender’s startup guard will tell you if a program is trying to load itself upon start up so you can choose to allow it or not. This software suite also comes with adware and spyware detectors. Though we recommend using an antispyware scanner, as they are designed specifically for this purpose, it is nice to have two programs working towards a common goal, to keep your computer clean.

Ease of Installation:

Installation of BitDefender is a snap. Uninstalling BitDefender was easy as well. We did find some leftover registry entries and directories after the uninstall completed though.

Help/Support:

When you purchase BitDefender you also receive one year of virus signature and scan engine updates. The manufacturer offers qualified technical support live via the Internet and telephone.

There is also an online database with answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) and they have an email address–they answered our email within 6 hours. An online forum is located at http://forum.bitdefender.com/.

Summary:

BitDefender is easy to use, simple to install, has a great feature set and at $24.95, it won’t break your bank account. Anyone who spends time on the Internet knows the importance of anti–virus software; BitDefender will keep your computer virus–free and running smoothly.

Kaspersky

Kaspersky

TopTenREVIEWS - Silver Award - Awarded for excellence in design, useability and feature setKaspersky Antivirus is a top of the line program that offers all the protection you will need. With low scan times and high detection rates, as well as an interface that can't be beat, Kaspersky Antivirus is our "TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award" winner.

Ease of Use:
In the past, Kaspersky had issues with their interface and the ease of use associated with it. They have listened to their customers over the years and changed the interface to rival others on the market. Now, simplicity is key within Kaspersky Antivirus. Kaspersky's main menu screen is split into different sections depending on what you would like to accomplish. Protection, Scan, Update, Reports and Data Files, and Support are listed on the left side of the screen with the options pertaining to each in a sub menu or on the right-hand side of the screen. There are also advanced options available through a settings option at the bottom of the screen.

Effectiveness:
Kaspersky Antivirus is one of the most advanced products on the market for virus scanning. Its on-access scanner is extremely fast and doesn't cause any noticeable slowdown of the computer while performing regular tasks such as browsing the web or writing documents or even higher end tasks such as transferring and moving files. The on-demand scanner within Kaspersky Antivirus is very fast as well. Another plus with Kaspersky is its light footprint on your system resources. Memory usage is minimal during the on access scanning times as well as on demand scanning. During a system scan, we noticed about 55MB of memory usage on average with up to 30% CPU usage.

Updates:
Kaspersky Antivirus checks for updates every hour by default. There are other programs out there that also do this but Kaspersky takes it to a new level because of the speed that they respond to outbreaks and release updates. If there is a major outbreak, Kaspersky Labs has an average update release time of less than 2 hours. This is the fastest of any antivirus company at this time.

Feature Set:

Features included with Kaspersky Antivirus are some of the most complete in the market. Beyond protecting your files and email from viruses, Kaspersky Labs took this a step further. They included a scanner that will check all the web pages you visit for viruses as well. This feature is especially useful for people that use Internet Explorer as their web browser due to the history of security holes related to viruses in the Internet cache your computer stores.

Kaspersky Antivirus also includes a registry protector called Registry Guard. This will prevent any unwanted changes to your computer registry.

We were especially impressed with the reporting features included with Kaspersky Antivirus. There are reports available for each scan that is done as well as "live" reports that are generated on the fly for several portions of the program that are scanning all the time.

Ease of Installation:
The installation of Kaspersky Antivirus is extremely simple and posed no problems for us. A single reboot was required to complete the installation.

Help/Support:
Kaspersky Labs offers several support options to help keep your system in top shape. Direct email support, support forums, phone support as well as an impressive FAQ are all available.

Summary:
Antivirus programs are a dime a dozen. Kaspersky makes nearly all of them look like a futile attempt at hanging with the big dogs. Many times Kaspersky has been awarded certification from top organizations such as ICSA and WCL, as well as receiving the TopTenREVIEWS Silver award multiple times. What this all comes down to is that the hard work Kaspersky puts into their products provides us with some of the most elite protection available. Whether you are just a novice or are dining with the digital elite, Kaspersky Antivirus is a great choice to protect your computer from the dark side of the Internet.

Norton Anti Virus

Norton AntiVirus

Norton Antivirus 2008 is a full featured antivirus and antispyware product. It includes several options that are commonly passed over by other suites while leaving many out that would be beneficial. The Norton scanning engine is one of the most complete on the market, but suffers from issues with system resource usage and overzealous integration with your computer that can cause freezing or simple hanging application.

Ease of Use:
Norton Antivirus 2008 is very easy to use. It comes with a default configuration that is sufficient to protect most home user systems. It integrates with the start bar with an icon that is large and easy to spot. The icon also includes a way to tell if your system is protected or needs intervention from the user.

Effectiveness:

Being VB100%, W.C.L 1 and 2, as well as ICSA certified means that Norton Antivirus 2008 is equipped to handle all of your virus scanning needs. The scanner has proven to 3 independent labs that it has the ability to detect and remove viruses and variants of all viruses that the Norton virus engine was tested against.

The antispyware capabilities of Norton Antivirus 2008 were less effective than the virus scanner. It missed all of our tests while finding only a single tracking cookie on our whole test system.

We noticed that Norton Antivirus still suffers from some pretty significant issues with the program eating up resources and just slowing down out test machine overall. This is something to keep in mind while making a decision on an antivirus solution.

Updates:
As of 2008, Norton Antivirus updates its virus signatures as needed. The averages on the web have mentioned time frames between once a day and 3 times a day where we experienced updates once a day during our testing period. This is a great improvement over the old system of looking for and installing updates only once a week.

Feature Set:
Norton Antivirus 2008 includes an antispyware scanner, Instant Messenger protection for MSN, Yahoo, AIM, and Trillian, as well as the ability to lock down program settings to help prevent other users on the computer from changing your settings. Symantec has still neglected to include parental controls with Norton Antivirus as well.

Ease of Installation:

While the installation of Norton Antivirus 2008 was rather long, it didn't require much intervention. It did require that we sign up for a Symantec account in order to complete the install. This account is used for downloading updates as well as keeping track of updates and other support information.

One additional thing to note is that uninstalling Norton Antivirus did not remove everything that was installed. There are several registry entries and directories left behind as well as the LiveUpdate program that has to be removed separately.

Help/Support:

Symantec has always been hit on their help and support by reviewers. This fine tradition doesn't end here as there seems to have been no changes since our Internet Security Suite review of Norton Internet Security. While they still offer free online chat and email support, their phone support option is still $9.95 per incident. Beyond this, they estimate a 30 minute wait time. We expect more for paid support options.

The live chat option is also much less useful than would be initially thought. It requires Internet Explorer to function as well as requiring an additional product install in order to get support. Once the application is installed, you still have to wait for a rep to come available. We stopped waiting after 25 minutes. For most people, this will probably be a bit more than they were looking to go through for support.

Summary:
Norton Antivirus 2008 is a good product for keeping your computer safe from viruses, but is not as effective as it should be against spyware. While it has a good track record of keeping viruses off of computers using it, it also has significant issues with slowing down computers that it is protecting. Symantec has done a lot to fix the slow down issues by reducing the amount of system resources used, but they still need to do more work to make the product a contender in the modern antivirus market.
